What to pack for the last approved destinations
This year, it’s hard to know where you’ll end up in August. Wait a minute, overseas vacations are out of the question and these are jeans and cotton sweaters in Blighty for the foreseeable future. Next up, the Balearic Islands, Malta and Madeira are back on the green list – if the EU lets us in …
For anyone hoping to trade Margate for Mallorca and Ilfracombe for Ibiza, you’ll need to pack a few new coins in your vacation suitcase along with your vaccination card. Forget about sturdy shoes and North Sea-friendly swimsuits, put on beige sandals, colorful bikinis and silky strappy dresses.
As a long-term student of various Mediterranean islands, I have also concluded that not all resorts have the same aesthetic. Where Ibiza meets haute couture and bohemianism, Malta is more conservative; Where Mallorca is synonymous with laid-back beach bars, Madeira is the perfect place for rock climbing and mountain hikes.

It is a Balearic island so trendy that entire collections of designers have been devoted to it; a place where brands are born and where fashion flies regularly (once) for launches and birthdays. That means a dingy old sundress probably won’t cut her off at one of the celebrity-packed beach bars overlooking Es Vedra.
Ironically, it was an Australian brand that produced some of the season’s most Ibiza-friendly dresses. Aje is full of colorful pieces featuring trendy cutouts that show off just the right amount of skin for an island Kate Moss has called her favorite vacation destination. I love this canary yellow number, or try this summer’s trend for all black with this cropped baby doll dress.
It is perhaps not surprising that the Spanish brand Uterque also offers a number of pieces that could have been (and probably were) designed for Ibiza. This mandarin orange satin dress with a bow at the waist would be a bit too much in most seaside destinations on the British coast, but is ideal for one of those stylish Ibiza bars that stay open until dawn . Pair it with slicked back hair and big golden hoops and wait for the compliments to arrive.
With one of the most beautiful coastlines in Spain and plenty of turquoise waters to wallow in, Menorca is the kind of island where you will be in beach attire from dawn until dusk. This requires an urgent update of your swimwear collection. Hunza G has an endlessly colorful selection of swimwear on sale that are much more flattering than you might expect, from stretchy styles to high waists. Try this swimsuit in hot pink or beige.
