How billionaire Rihanna escaped tough years in Barbados
At just 33 years old, Rihanna is worth A $ 2.2 billion and is now the richest woman in music and the second richest woman in entertainment, behind Oprah Winfrey.
It’s a far cry from the girl who grew up in a modest home in Barbados and used music as a way to escape her father’s violent struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.
But, despite his initial success as a pop star, his massive wealth is not due to his music.
Since launching her beauty brand Fenty in 2017, Rihanna has worked hard to make it the A $ 1.8 billion empire that it has become.
In fact, she said that’s part of “the reason an album doesn’t spit out the way it used to”.
So how did Rihanna get so rich? We take a closer look at his earnings.
Rihanna – real name Robyn Fenty – grew up in Barbados but had a difficult childhood as her father struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction.
She said Rolling stone how he would beat his mother, and even hit her once too.
Rihanna was trying to get between her parents to break up a fight, and once tried to distract them by smashing a glass bottle
“Domestic violence is not something people want everyone to know, so she was just hiding it in the house,” she said.
Rihanna’s parents finally divorced when she was 14, and she took over as caregiver for her younger brother while her mother worked full time.
“I grew up fast, kind of like second mom,” Rihanna told the Guardian.
In 2013, the singer quietly forwarded her father Ronald to a $ 58,000 drug rehab program in Malibu.
Today, their relationship is strong and she still takes care of her father.
“Always wanted to be a pop star”
Rihanna explained that she used music as an escape, and “she always knew she wanted to be a pop star.”
In 2003, she formed a musical trio with two of her classmates and had the chance to audition for record producer Evan Rogers, who was on vacation in Barbados with his wife.
Evan immediately liked her and later told Entertainment Weekly that “the minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist.”
Over the next year, Rihanna visited Evan’s in Connecticut to work on her demo album.
With the help of songwriter Carl Sturken, she produced a four-song demo including Pon de Replay, which would become her first hit single.
“I left Barbados and didn’t look back”
Rihanna officially moved to the United States at the age of 16.
“When I left Barbados, I didn’t look back,” she said. “I wanted to do what I had to do, even if it meant moving to America.”
Soon after, his demo fell into the hands of the record company Def Jam.
She auditioned for them and legendary rapper Jay-Z, who was so impressed he signed her “the same day”.
Eight months later, Rihanna released her first album, The music of the sun, which turned platinum.
Break charter records
His follow-up album, A girl like me, was released in 2006, but it wasn’t until his third album, Good girl turned bad, came out in 2007 as things really started to improve.
It featured the hit single Umbrella, who managed to stay atop the UK singles chart for 10 straight weeks, the longest run to number one for a single in this decade.
It is also listed in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and won his first Grammy Award.
Since then she has won countless awards and worked with legends such as Kanye West and Calvin Harris.
She is now the second-best-selling female artist of all time after Madonna, having moved 250 million records, and seven of her eight studio albums have made the top 10 in the UK.
But, since she came out Anti in 2016, Rihanna focused on her business rather than her music.
$ 3.7 billion beauty brand
Rihanna launched her cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty, in 2017 alongside luxury giant LVMH, which owns 50% of the company.
With the goal of appealing to “all types of women” and the release of 40 different foundation shades, Riri’s business quickly took off.
She recorded sales totaling over A $ 13 million in the first two weeks, and in less than four years, Rihanna’s makeup brand grew into a billion dollar business.
After their first calendar year, the line “brought in over A $ 744 million in annual revenue,” Forbes revealed.
He beat Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner, KKW Beauty by Kim Kardashian West and Honest Company by Jessica Alba.
Bluestock Advisors co-founder Shannon Coyne explained, “A lot of women felt there were no ranges to match their skin tone. It was light, medium, medium-dark, dark.
“We all know that’s not the reality. She was one of the first brands to come out and say “I want to talk to all these different people.”
Last year, she launched Fenty Skin, which is sure to earn her even more money.
And Forbes estimated that Fenty Beauty as a whole is worth A $ 3.7 billion and will likely continue to grow, as LMVH said it has “maintained its appeal as a leading makeup brand.”
$ 363 million lingerie brand
A year after making her mark in the beauty industry, Rihanna launched her lingerie company, Savage x Fenty.
The underwear models were noticeably different from other brands like Victoria’s Secret, as there were women of all shapes, sizes, and races – and included pregnant women.
And the lingerie brand even produces its own show, broadcast on Amazon, with artists like Lizzo.
Of the brand’s first show in 2018, Rihanna said, “I wanted to include all women. I wanted each woman on stage to have different energies, different races, different body types, different stages of their femininity, of their culture.
“I wanted women to feel celebrated and for us to start this shit. We have it. It is our land because it really is.
“Women are running the world right now and it’s a shame for the men.”
Thanks to Rihanna’s support, as well as the brand’s inclusive models, it became a huge hit and is now worth AU $ 363 million.
Make-up to music
Due to the success of her ventures, Rihanna has shifted her focus away from her music – from which the rest of her fortune comes.
“I was in the studio, only in the studio, for three months in a row, and an album was coming out,” she said. “Now it’s like a carousel.
“I do fashion one day, lingerie the next, beauty the next day, then music the next day. It’s like having a bunch of kids, and you have to take care of them all.
Fans are in desperate need of new music, but Rihanna keeps the schtum when you might expect it.
“I can’t tell when I’m going to fall,” she said Vogue in 2020 to potentially release their ninth studio album in the future. “But I work very aggressively on the music.”
And we can be sure that her pot of money will get even bigger every time she takes it out.
